This year’s Community Potluck Picnic, held in Combermere Park on June 14, was enjoyed by all who gathered. The food was excellent with a wonderful variety of salads, stews, sandwiches, chips, cakes, cookies, watermelon, macarons, and more. The conversations among all were lively, and there were informal games such as croquet for young people.
Councillor Tierney joined the fun and contributed a celebratory cake in recognition of the 65th anniversary of the founding of our RHPOA Community Association. He also spoke to attendees, describing the timeline of a project the RHPOA has requested of the City - to design and implement a more appropriate (and shaded!) gathering place in Combermere Park’s green space for residents to enjoy.
Because this design project is larger in scope than simply planting trees (planned for this year), other changes to some of the Park’s green space will likely not happen until next year.
Councillor Tierney took questions from attendees. When asked how the City would manage the anticipated overflow of parking on some of our residential streets by future occupants of and visitors to the 26-storey tower (now under construction at the corner of Blair and Montreal Roads), he described procedures used in other communities, such as a petition of affected residents followed by possible parking bans or limits being instituted. Another question about whether the tennis court lights could be operated on an as-needed basis instead of on an automatic timer resulted in a request that an email describing the problem be sent to the Councillor’s office and it would be dealt with. And there were other good questions – one young lady asked if we could plant a watermelon tree.
In summary, although the weather was sunny and quite hot, the picnic was a very enjoyable and opportunity to socialize with other residents, and to converse directly with the Councillor.
Thanks to all who attended for sharing your culinary specialties!
