NCC Extends Weekend Closures of Parkway to Motorized Traffic to October 12
UPDATE : Extended to October 12
Good news for cyclists, runners and pedestrians of all ages!
On Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 4pm until October 12, the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway will be closed to motor vehicles between the Aviation Parkway and St. Joseph Boulevard.
The weekend closures began in May as a pilot project by the National Capital Commission (NCC) to provide local residents with a greater opportunity to get outdoors and exercise while practising safe physical distancing.
In response to its initial success, the project was first extended to June 28, to September 7, September 27 and now, to October 12.
The NCC encourages those taking advantage of the Parkway closures to get there on foot or by bike.
All users should follow basic safety rules:
- Slower traffic keeps to the right
- Faster traffic passes on the left
- Ring bell or call out when passing
Residents of all ages have been enjoying this car-free opportunity, which we are pleased to see extended.

Our thanks to the NCC, and to all who completed the NCC feedback surveys which helped implement extension of this populalr program.
