Annual BBQ and Picnic a Huge Success!
The 12th Annual Community BBQ – Potluck Picnic was held on Saturday afternoon at Combermere Park.
Despite a very rainy morning and a gloomy mid-day, the weather was perfect for the late-afternoon event. It was difficult to accurately count participants—there were so many children that we couldn’t keep track of them all! We believe that over 90 people attended.
We do know that our youngest participant was only 3 days old – welcome to the neighbourhood and to the world, Mackenzie Clermont! Our oldest participant was 91 years
young, and happy to share stories with neighbours and friends of the early days of Rothwell Heights. Our newest residents were also in attendance (they moved into the neighbourhood 3 days ago), as well as several of our longtime residents of over 50 years. We can safely say that the community was well-represented at this event, with residents from all three levels of Rothwell Heights.
Many also enjoyed an opportunity to talk at length to Councillor Bellemare, who arrived early with his family and stayed late to discuss local issues and interests with several residents. Not all talk around the park was serious, though, as most people chatted more casually with neighbours, both old and new.
The food was wonderful – thanks to David Whillans as Master BBQ chef and Entertainment Director, Mandy Brady and Cynthia Beck as Chief Organizers, and to all attendees who brought delicious offerings ranging from salads to desserts that filled two large tables. There were no leftovers! The children’s games were colourful and engaging, with youngsters moving back and forth between the play structure area and the open parkland with a quick stop at the food-and-drinks in between.
All in all, it was a pleasant afternoon that everyone enjoyed. Please send in your comments and suggestions for this or other future events – we’d love to hear your views.
